This past Sunday, I preached on Ephesians 5:22-33, a sermon entitled Marriage as Christ Loves the Church . Wife, submit to your husband, as to the Lord. Husband, love your wife as Christ loves the church and gave Himself up for her. Marriage is not a man-made institution—it is made by God. He created marriage and gave it to us as a picture of the way Christ loves His church. Jesus defined marriage this way: "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matthew 19:4-6).
